Students of Hotelschool The Hague, who are well-known for their hands-on mentality, strong social skills and pragmatic attitude, are keen on placements with many challenges and responsibilities. In other words, the hotel school students are eager to learn to become the managers of the future!

We have two Practical placements rounds, one group of students start around February - March and another group around August-September.''

Our final year students start their final internship throughout the whole year, depending on their individual progress within our programme. However, a large group of students start around November - December - January or July- August-September.



In order to become a placement company, your company should:

  • Have a written placement programme that has to be accepted by the Placement Office; 
  • Have a placement programme with a proper introduction period; 
  • Be a renowned brand in the hospitality industry;
  • Guarantee guidance during the placement; 
  • Agree on pay/remuneration to the student beforehand; 
  • Observe the CAO agreements pertaining to working hours and free time if your company is situated in the Netherlands. If your company is situated outside the Netherlands it must observe the legal regulations current in that specific country related to working hours and time off.

Practical Placement

Our students gain a great deal of knowledge during their first year when being trained in various departments within Hotelschool The Hague, amongst which: Food & Beverage and/or Rooms Division, Kitchen, Reception, Housekeeping and other divisions. The students are eager to extend their knowledge and gain greater insight into operational processes by fulfilling a practical placement, possibly at your company.

In order to offer a Practical Placement, your company should be a four- or five-star hotel outside The Netherlands with a minimum of 60 hotel rooms, as this is the standard for our hospitality students. As the primary goal of the practical placement is to gain operational knowledge, the placement you offer should be operational.

During the final part of their degree programme, students work in and for companies. How can your company benefit from our students?

Final year Hotelschool The Hague students can be employed as researchers, consultants and as interns. A combination of these roles is also possible, even desirable. Students work independently on an agreed plan of action in the role of researcher and/or consultant. When employed as trainees, our students often work, after proving their ability, in junior management or junior staff positions. The practical roles are often fulfilled by students in their 2nd year. Whilst working for your company, students are continuously supported by experienced coaches of Hotelschool The Hague. The aim of this joint approach is to optimise the learning experience and improve the quality of work.

Launching Your Career: a great start

The graduation phase of the Hotelschool The Hague degree programme has been designed to bridge the gap between the students’ education and their future career. The programme is called Launching Your Career – LYCAR. In this programme, the students have the possibility to work on a different number of projects within a time span of 30 weeks. Students are required (with help from their coach) to write a Career Launching Plan (CLP) before the execution of the LYCAR programme. In this plan (CLP), they formulate their personal and professional goals, their ambition levels, the projects they work on and the products they will deliver. Their plan has to meet 4 requirements:

1. It must have an external focus: the student must be able to execute his/her career launch plan for one or more companies.
2. It must include a research component: the student must conduct an investigation as part of his/her plan (CLP). This can be either fundamental or applied research. A basic requirement is that it adds value to the client and the analysis is done at a Bachelor level. It can be an independent project or a larger ongoing project.
3. It must demonstrate a clear link to hospitality: Hotelschool The Hague educates students for careers in the international hospitality sector, and the LYCAR programme must always contain a clear link to hospitality. This can also be achieved in companies who do not have hospitality as part of their core process.
4. It must have an international character: The student has to ensure that the LYCAR products have an international aspect, which can also be achieved when working in the Netherlands.

The Student

What can you expect from a Hotelschool The Hague student? Our students are distinguished by their versatile nature. First, they have a well-developed theoretical knowledge and grounding in the most relevant (hospitality) business management disciplines. Moreover, they have excellent practical experience and skills. Furthermore, they have well-developed personal and communication skills. In addition to their native language and English, they can communicate well in at least one other language. Our students can be practical as well as analytical in their work. They are eager and have experienced living and studying in an international community.


To complete LYCAR successfully, the student must produce final products. The content and form of the final products are determined by the needs of your company and the student’s learning objectives. The final product can take many forms; it can be a process improvement plan, a newly developed training manual, or a consultancy report. It can also be a working website or a successfully organised event. By law, the final product has to be formally assessed by lecturers. For this assessment your evaluation of the student’s performance is extremely important.

The student’s responsibility

Throughout their final phase, students are responsible for their own learning process. This means that they are responsible for correct and timely communication with all stakeholders involved in their project, and especially with regards to communication with the client.

The school’s responsibility

The school provides a team of experienced coaches who guide the student throughout the LYCAR process. Each student has his/her own personal career coach who helps him/her from the start to the finish. In addition, students can be assisted by an expert coach with specialised content issues. The Placement Office helps with initiating and supporting LYCAR projects. The school is ultimately responsible for approving the Plan (CLP) and for assessing the final product.

The company’s responsibility

Your role is to be able to offer the student a challenging role in your company throughout the LYCAR experience. You are expected to introduce and support your student as you would any other employee. You should allow the student to develop professionally within your company, whilst working on assigned projects. The student’s final products should add value to your company.
